Jan Barlow writes and illustrates children's picture books and has just independently published her first book, 'Velvet, the Very Small Bear' in the 'Oak Tree Forest Friends' Series. Her light-hearted animal stories are about valuing difference, encouraging inclusivity, developing empathy and kindness and building self-esteem; with a touch of fun along the way.

 

Being a Mum, and Nana and always thoroughly enjoying the company of children, especially through play, art and picture books; led Jan to working with children. She has worked in Education for many years including working with children and their families in Social Care and Education; promoting child development. Her B.A. (Hons) in Childhood & Youth Studies, informed her work and practice. All these and other life experiences have influenced Jan’s journey to become an author and write and illustrate stories for children. 

 

Art has always featured throughout Jan’s life. She studied creative studies and design at college when her children were young and she took commissions for pet portraits. The combination of writing, art and love of animals and the outdoors, have inspired her animal tales for children.
